This page explains exactly what our freight class calculator does and does not provide. Please read this before relying on any estimate from our tool for a shipment.

This Is an Estimate, Not a Final Classification

Our calculator gives you a density-based estimate of your NMFC freight class, using the current NMFTA density scale. It calculates your shipment’s cubic feet and density in pounds per cubic foot from the dimensions and weight you enter, then matches that density against the current 13-tier scale.

This estimate reflects density alone. Your actual freight class also depends on stowability, handling, and liability, three factors our calculator cannot evaluate from dimensions and weight alone. Your LTL carrier determines your final freight class at pickup, and that determination can differ from our estimate.

No Guarantee of Accuracy

While we build and maintain this calculator against current published NMFTA standards, we cannot guarantee that our estimate will match your carrier’s final classification in every case. Freight class also depends on named NMFC item listings for certain commodities. Five of the eighteen total classes, 77.5, 110, 150, 200, and 500, are assigned by commodity listing rather than density, and our calculator cannot identify whether your specific commodity falls into one of these categories.

Not a Substitute for Carrier Confirmation

Always confirm your exact freight class with your carrier before booking a shipment, particularly for freight that is fragile, high value, hazardous, perishable, or unusually shaped. Carriers reweigh and remeasure freight at the terminal, and a mismatch between your declared class and what they find can result in a reclassification fee, typically fifty to one hundred fifty dollars plus the rate difference. Our tool is designed to help you get close to the correct number, not to replace that confirmation step.

Standards Can Change

NMFC classifications and density scales are maintained and updated by NMFTA, most recently restructured in July 2025. We update our calculator and content when we become aware of changes, but there may be a gap between an official update and our reflection of it. Always verify against current carrier tariffs for time-sensitive shipments.
